Zanzibar Airport Car Rental
Most visitors land at Abeid Amani Karume Airport and reach their hotel by meet-and-greet rental car — Stone Town is 20 minutes away, Nungwi about 90, and there are no rental desks inside arrivals.

Arriving at Abeid Amani Karume Airport (ZNZ)
Zanzibar's gateway is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), about 7 km south of Stone Town. The modern Terminal 3 handles international flights — European charters from Italy, Germany and Poland, Gulf carriers from Doha, Dubai and Muscat, and regional hops from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam — while Terminal 2 covers domestic routes.
One thing to expect: there are no traditional car rental counters in the ZNZ arrivals hall. Every operator, local or international, works by meet-and-greet — a representative meets you outside the exit with a name board and hands over the car in the car park.
How the meet-and-greet pickup works
Because there are no desks, the handover happens curbside and it is quick. Send your flight details when you book so the operator can track late or delayed arrivals — reputable companies will meet a 2am landing without complaint.
- A representative waits at the arrivals exit holding a board with your name
- You show your passport, home licence and the booking confirmation
- They hand over the keys, the car papers and your pre-arranged Zanzibar driving permit
- Walk the car together and photograph every existing scratch, the tyres and the fuel level
- Drive off — no terminal queue, with the permit already in hand
Local operators also deliver free to Stone Town, the ferry port and most beach hotels, so airport collection is only one option. If you would rather settle in first, many visitors take a transfer on day one and have the car delivered to the hotel the next morning.
Driving from the airport to your hotel
Distances look short but feel slower, thanks to the speed bumps in every village and the congestion around Stone Town and Darajani market. The route north to Nungwi and east to Paje is good, well-signed tarmac the whole way; only the final sandy lane to a beach hotel may need a little care in a low car.
| From the airport to | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Town | 7 km | 15–20 min |
| Nungwi & Kendwa (north) | 60–67 km | 1 hr 15 min – 1 hr 30 min |
| Matemwe (northeast) | 50–55 km | about 1 hr |
| Paje & Jambiani (east) | 50 km | about 1 hr |
| Kizimkazi (south) | 60–65 km | 1 hr 15 min |
Top up the tank near Stone Town before a long run — the Mtoni station just north of the city is the handy one heading to the beaches. For the full rules of the road and the speed limits enforced at checkpoints, see our driving in Zanzibar guide.
Rental car versus taxi or transfer
A pre-booked transfer is the easiest way to reach a single resort, and for a quiet beach week it is the sensible pick. But once you plan to move around — two bases, day trips, repeated airport runs — the maths swings firmly toward a rental car, since taxis are unmetered and priced per journey.
| From the airport to | Private taxi (one way) | Pre-booked transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Town | $15 | $15–25 |
| Paje (east coast) | $28–35 | $30–35 |
| Nungwi (north) | $34–50 | $40–65 |
A week-long compact SUV at $25–35 a day with unlimited mileage often costs less than two return taxi trips to Nungwi — and it is yours for the spice farms, Stone Town and the beaches too. Compare live prices any time with our booking tool.
Before you drive off: permit and paperwork
The single legal box to tick is the local Zanzibar driving permit, which your operator should hand over at pickup along with the keys. A home licence or International Driving Permit alone will not satisfy the police checkpoints you will pass on the way to the beaches.
Keep your licence, the permit and a passport copy together on the seat. Remember too that a car rented on Unguja stays on Unguja — it cannot cross to Pemba or the mainland. With the car sorted, the whole island opens up, from day trips to Jozani and the coast to a relaxed base back in the capital.
