Stone Town Car Rental & Base Guide

Stone Town is the island's arrival hub — airport, ferry port and most rental offices — but its UNESCO lanes are car-free, so you park on the edge and drive out to the beaches and forest.

Stone Town as your base

Stone Town is the natural hub of any Zanzibar trip. The airport is 15–20 minutes away, the Dar es Salaam ferry docks in town, and most car rental offices are based here. Choosing it as your base trades beachfront for culture — the UNESCO old town's Swahili-Omani architecture, rooftop restaurants, markets and history — and it puts you in the centre of the island's road network.

The old town itself is walked, not driven — its lanes are a car-free maze. A rental car still suits a Stone Town base, because the island's best day trips fan out efficiently from here.

Parking and the car-free old town

Do not try to drive into the historic core — the alleys were built for foot traffic and handcarts, and a car will get stuck. Instead, leave it in a guarded lot on the edge and walk in; the old town is small enough to cross on foot. Tip the parking attendant, and be ready for them to shuffle tightly packed cars.

  • Park near the port, Forodhani Gardens or along the Mizingani seafront
  • Guarded edge lots typically cap out around 10,000 TZS (about $4) a day
  • Explore the Old Fort, Forodhani night market, the former slave market and Darajani on foot
  • Beach hotels and inland sights all have their own parking, so the car is only idle in town

Day trips from a Stone Town base

The hub-and-spoke layout is what makes a car pay off here. From a Stone Town base you can drive out to a beach, a forest or a spice farm in the morning and be back among the rooftop restaurants by night. These are the typical drive times from the city.

Picking up a car in Stone Town

Most local operators deliver free to your Stone Town hotel, the ferry port or the airport, so you rarely need to visit an office. Send a photo of your licence when booking and they will have your Zanzibar driving permit ready at handover. Walk around the car with the agent and photograph any existing marks before you set off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you drive a car in Stone Town?
Not into the old town itself — its narrow UNESCO lanes are effectively pedestrian and impassable for cars. You park in a guarded lot on the edge, near the port or Forodhani Gardens, and explore on foot. The car is for driving out to the beaches, forest and spice farms.
Where do you park in Stone Town?
Use the guarded edge lots near Malindi port, Forodhani Gardens or along the Mizingani seafront. A day typically costs up to around 10,000 TZS (about $4). Attendants may move tightly parked cars, so leaving the key is normal — tip a small amount on collection.
Is Stone Town a good base for exploring Zanzibar by car?
Yes, if you value culture and central access over beachfront. The airport and ferry port are close, most rental offices are here, and day trips to Jozani, the spice farms and both coasts radiate out efficiently — none more than about 90 minutes away.
Will the rental company deliver a car to my Stone Town hotel?
Almost always. Local operators routinely deliver free to Stone Town hotels, the ferry terminal and the airport, with the driving permit prepared in advance. That means you usually never need to find a rental office in person.
